PRODUCTS I LOVE AND BELIEVE IN : Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream
One of my fave all-time moisturizers just got a power boost. And just in time! For the last three bone-chilling New York City winters, K-beauty brand Dr. Jart’s iconic Ceramidin Cream has saved my skin from certain destruction. I’m only barely exaggerating. I live right on the Hudson River and when the winds pick up, it can literally feel like hell has indeed frozen over. Day in and day out, the cold winds buffet my skin, sapping it of the protective, nourishing oils it needs to defend against water loss and maintain healthy functions like repairing against environmental damage and preventing loss of collagen. No small matter — and a particular problem in extreme cold temps.
I’ve found the Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream to be one of the best defenses available to keep skin from drying out. It’s a serious treatment for seriously dry skin conditions. And I love Dr. Jart for that. While the brand has its fun, quirky side with products like those crazy-fun Shake & Shot Rubber Masks, the formulas are based in serious, tried-and-true science.
So I’m excited to enter the coming colder months armed with a revamped Ceramidin Cream, upgraded with more ceramide-powered defense against dryness — in any climate, but particularly in the harsh, cold air. Dr. Jart supercharged its new Ceramidin Cream with a proprietary 5-Cera Complex, a blend of all five ceramides useful in skin care and clinically proven to help strengthen the skin barrier. In addition to defending the body against external attacks, a strong skin barrier is vital to preventing the loss of both oil-based moisture and water-based hydration that skin needs daily.
What are Ceramides?!
Ceramides are our skin’s natural protection barrier. They’re composed of intercellular lipids that act as skin’s defense against environmental aggressors, helping to maintain moisture levels. Think of your skin as a brick wall. When it’s first built, it’s strong and sturdy. Over time, it needs additional fortification to remain strong. As we age, we lose ceramides, leading to a decrease in elasticity and moisture. And, an increase in signs of aging!
Beyond its characteristic ceramides, the new Ceramidin Cream is a powerful blend of humectants and skin-replenishing non-fragrant plant oils that dry skin loves — including Shea Butter, Glycerin, and Sodium Hyaluronate — the salt form of Hyaluronic Acid that’s more compatible with skin. On top of that, Dr. Jart’s new formula contains several nourishing ingredients that will go even further to keeping skin healthy throughout the winter. Bifida Ferment Lysate, a soothing probiotic, has been proven to help fortify skin barrier function and even prevent irritation. And the cold wind can be quite a skin irritant!
Perhaps as important as what’s in the formula is what’s not in the formula. Dr. Jart removed drying denatured alcohol and fragrant plant “essential” oils that can irritate and sensitize skin — like lavender, orange and various and sundry mint oils. I’m not sure what they’re essential for, but it’s certainly not skin health. There’s an excellent source of information from skincare guru Paula Begoun on essential oils, good and bad, here.
I never look forward to the cold. But Dr. Jart’s new Ceramidin Cream will at least make it more bearable!
