SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT SUMMER MOISTURIZERS PART II
IMG_9378.jpg

The good thing about the summer heat is you always look like you’re dewy and glowing! And as much as I want to complain about how uncomfortable the heat is, I have to remind myself that there’s no greater torture to me than the cold in the middle of February. I distinctly recall this one frigid winter morning when I was maybe 14-15 years old. It was about 7:30 a.m. and I was on my way to school waiting alone in the cold at the bus stop. My big puffy coat was little comfort in the zero-degree air around me. Every time a car whizzed by, the cold air enveloped me and took a piece of my soul. The school bus was running late and I remember thinking something as dramatic as: I’m in hell. This is barbaric and disrespectful. Of all days to have to stand out here waiting for the bus to come.

Today, I would have posted a pic of myself with a simple caption: WTF?!

It was in that moment that I made my first big life-altering decision: I was going to move to California when I grew up. Just seven winters later, I made that happen! I was warm and happy in Los Angeles for 15 years — before I moved back to the East Coast and New York City. You know, before I moved back to the cold. I was warm, happy and dewy in LA most of the time. And I’m certainly warm, happy and dewy as I write this on a beautiful June day.

At least in the summer you’re always dewy and glowing.

At least in the summer you’re always dewy and glowing.

Last week, I blogged about five cool, lightweight summer moisturizers. If you missed it, you can catch it here. As I said, I’ve been planning to write about my super light summertime picks for about six months. I narrowed it down to ten in all — and am excited to share the other five with you now. (Again, if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere where it’s likely cold now, I invite you to check out my winter skin care article titled Skincarma Approved: 3 Top Facial Moisturizers For Winter Weather.)

Super lightweight textures are everything in hot, humid weather.

Super lightweight textures are everything in hot, humid weather.

The cool thing about having thought about this blog for such an extended period is that I was able to pull together a broad range of textures — from conventional gel-creams to an innovative mousse and a moisturizing liquid.

So let me start with the most innovative of the ten — that intriguing mousse.

Laneige Fresh Calming Mousse Moisturizer

IMG_6792.jpg

A rich, frothy foaming moisturizer? It sounds a bit nuts. But with the popularity of cleansing foams in the K-beauty “double cleanse,” this isn’t all that much of a stretch really. The idea of a moisturizing mousse seems gimmicky at first, but any time a serious skincare product is protected from oxidation due to exposure to air, it’s a win. Period.

The Laneige Fresh Calming Mousse Moisturizer is a fluffy, airy mousse sealed in a can with the delivery of a shave foam. Like all of Laneige’s products, it’s formulated with the brand’s characteristic Water Science — in this case, nutrient-rich deep sea water. Lychee Peel Extract, rich in polyphenols, delivers vital antioxidant protection. Polyphenols are a group of antioxidants derived from fruits, vegetables, and plants that have potent protective benefits against free radical damage. The most common ones are found in grapes and cacao — and the reason why wine and chocolate have real health benefits.

IMG_9456.JPG

In addition to polyphenol-rich Lychee Extract, the Fresh Calming Mousse Moisturizer contains deep sea water that’s rich in skin-compatible minerals. Minerals are great in skincare because they’re great in skin, helping to more evenly disperse water throughout skin’s layers to balance hydration levels.

This mousse thing is just plain cool!

A quick rub into the palms and it transforms into a watery, non-sticky serum that melts right into the skin for a refreshing burst of hydration. It’s such a delight — and the fact that it’s a well-formulated product rich in antioxidants that remain effective longer means it’s going to continue to deliver what skin needs down to the very last drop!

Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator

IMG_8951.jpg

In part one of my summer moisturizer series last week, I recommended what I consider a conventional A-Beauty gel-cream. Ironically, it’s the Hyaluronic Marine Oil-Free Moisture Cushion from NY-based clinical skincare brand Dr. Dennis Gross. Since it’s completely devoid of oils, Moisture Cushion is focused predominately on hydration — both delivering hydration to the skin and preventing water loss through a mix of effective humectants. Clinique’s Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator is a similar formula with the equivalent benefits.

The Moisture Surge 72-Hour Hydrator is, like most of Clinique’s skincare, very well-formulated. It’s loaded with hydration-binding humectants, including Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water and Sodium Hyaluronate — the salt form of Hyaluronic Acid that’s more skin compatible. There are several soothing, antioxidant extracts, too, including Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Lady's Thistle Extract and Birch Bark Extract.

IMG_9598.JPG

The texture is wonderful. Its got this interesting watery, yet fluffy feel that melts right in and leaves skin feeling comfortably moisturized and deeply hydrated without any film or lingering effect. It’s just super refreshing.

And now to answer the question I know you’re dying to ask: Did it keep your skin hydrated for 72 hours? Who knows. I would never wait three days before replenishing my skin with hydration and moisture. Unless I were being held hostage.

Kiehl’s Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream

I’ve been a fan of Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner since the early 2000s — even before I started working at Kiehl’s as their first-ever copywriter. I always thought it was a bit of an unsung hero among Kiehl’s legacy products — that is, products that have been in the range for decades and that may not seem very fresh and modern.

IMG_6211.jpg

Calendula Toner has a place among a select few of these Kiehl’s favorites, including Blue Astringent Herbal Toner, Creme de Corps, Lip Balm #1 and Ultra Facial Moisturizer. But it never really garnered the attention it deserves, existing in the shadow of those big products icons — many of them with huge fan bases. In fact, Andy Warhol was a fan of Blue Astringent! It wasn’t until Kiehl’s became popular throughout Asia — especially in Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Mainland China — that Calendula Toner was finally recognized as the great formula it is, and always was.

All these years later, I’m excited to experience the new Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream! It’s very likely intended to satisfy the desires of those same Asian fans of Calendula Toner that Kiehl’s has extended the beloved calendula formula into a lightweight gel-cream — the precise type of hydrating moisturizer popular in A-Beauty. It’s available worldwide, and good thing because it’s perfect for all skin types in any climate, but particularly in hot, humid weather. Calendula Water Cream has a soothing, melty texture that absorbs instantly, which I love.

Kiehl’s Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream helps soothe irritated skin in hot, humid weather.

Kiehl’s Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream helps soothe irritated skin in hot, humid weather.

It’s formulated with Calendula Flower Extract and, apparently, hundreds of micronized calendula petals in each jar. Though I don’t get the point of micronized flower petals, it does smell fresh and herbaceous like, I dunno, fresh picked marigolds — aka calendula! It contains several soothing botanical extracts, including Bisabolol, the active component of chamomile proven to have potent anti-irritation benefits on the skin. It’s been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries — and the perfect Kiehl’s “old-world apothecary” ingredient.

Hanyul Pure Artemisia Watery Calming Cream

IMG_8920.jpg

A few months ago, I got my hands on several products from clean K-Beauty brand Hanyul. Amorepacific’s Hanyul relies on traditional skincare recipes handed down from generation to generation, and formulates products with many Hanbang ingredients. Hanbang is traditional Korean herbal medicine — used to treat everything from chronic cough to skin inflammation and sensitivity. Hanbang ingredients in skin care include many commonly known plant-derived actives like ginseng, green tea, lotus root, ginger and licorice — antioxidant botanicals that can brighten, soothe, or moisturize the skin.

I love that. And I’ve been intrigued by Hanyul ever since. One of the products I had stashed away for warmer weather is the Hanyul Pure Artemisia Watery Calming Cream.

If you’re asking yourself what artemisia is, I’m right there with you. I googled it. Artemisia is more commonly known as mugwort, which has played an important role in Chinese acupuncture for more than 3,000 years. And this sounds so wild, I couldn’t overlook it: Mugwort “is used in moxibustion, a process where mugwort leaves are gathered into sticks or cones the size of a cigar, and then burned over an acupuncture point to help release energy.”

Wow, okay. Moxibustion! What does this have to do with skincare? Well, the extract from Mugwort also has the ability to soothe irritation, much like another Asian skincare powerhouse botanical ingredient, Centella Asiatica. Like all of Hanyul’s skincare, the Pure Artemisia Watery Calming Cream formula is “clean” and treats sensitive skin (or any skin!) gently.

Hanyul Pure Artemisia Watery Calming Cream is a clean formula based on traditional herbal medicine.

The Watery Calming Cream is a bit richer than the other gel-creams that I’ve recommended in this two part series. With a high level of Shea Butter, it’s best for normal, combo or even mildly dry skin, though I would imagine it would be fine for normal to oily skin given its soothing properties. It’s really loaded with antioxidant botanicals — so many, in fact, that I didn’t bother counting them all. It’s got a light herbal scent that I find quite pleasant and an intriguing “natural ion water” that apparently facilities absorption.

Mxt. Carmine’s Deep Hydration Fluid Treatment

Okay, so a few months ago, I discovered this fascinating indie skincare brand based in New Orleans called Stubborn Cosmetics. As I wrote in a blog article on the brand titled, Stubborn Custom Face Moisturizer, I was mesmerized by the fact that Stubborn customizes and even personalizes their moisturizers based on a simple online quiz that evaluates your needs based on your age, skin type, levels of stress and sensitivity, personal skin concerns, environment where you live — and even the amount of sleep you get each night. I was blown away by the concept.

Custom skin care from U.K.-based Bio-Extracts.

Custom skin care from U.K.-based Bio-Extracts.

Several weeks later, I discovered a brand out of the U.K. that’s come up with their own version of skincare customization. At the time, I wrote that Bio-Extracts has perfected the concept of customization with 100% vegan, plant-based formulas that tailor your skin care to your skin’s precise needs at any given moment — as your lifestyle changes, as the weather changes, as your mood changes. Seriously. Bio-Extracts makes it all possible.” You can read my blog about Bio-Extracts here.

Now, almost a year after Stubborn blew me away with my own Custom Face Moisturizer made for me, I’ve discovered a custom skincare brand that’s harnessed Artificial Intelligence to take product customization even further. This is exactly how I imagine Uhura, Sulu, Spock, McCoy and the gang would get their skin care on the Starship Enterprise. They would order it up from the ship’s computer and a custom treatment would appear in the replicator.

Meet Mxt. — AI-powered custom made skin care.

IMG_9637.JPG

Mxt. custom made skin care was founded by a team of creatives and beauty industry professionals who sought an answer to one simple question:

“What if beauty products weren’t always in stock, but rather were custom made to consumers’ needs and specifications?”

They had their answer in the AI-powered skincare brand they created to personalize products on-demand. Mxt. claims to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence to offer more than 40 million possible formulations in a broad range of product forms — including serums, moisturizers, scrubs, mists and masks infused with hundreds of proven active ingredients like AHAs, antioxidant botanicals, vitamins, Retinol, peptides and even multiple forms of Hyaluronic Acid. With dozens of options for adding pro-skin health ingredients to nearly any formula, your skin gets exactly what it needs. Of course, no one knows your skin better than you do.

Mxt. offers two distinct ways to customize your treatments. The first is what they call “Mixed For You”. This option invites you to answer several targeted questions about your skin’s condition and needs. Then, Mxt.’s AI technology creates formulas and prescribes the treatments ideal for your skin right now — including a 3-piece custom-mixed regimen made for you.

The second option is the most intriguing — and the one Spock would find truly “fascinating”! It’s called “Mixed by You” and empowers you to create your own skincare products using existing formula bases, then permits you to select a few active ingredients from about 12 considered compatible with the formula. You can also adjust textures to fully customize your product.

IMG_6068.jpg

I created two products to begin with (three more are on the way!). Quite intentionally, I was thinking about hot humid weather when I made my Custom Mixed Deep Hydration Fluid Treatment. With the help of the questionnaire and that menu of active ingredient add-ons, I created a super light, milky emulsion that delivers protective antioxidants, soothing botanicals, replenishing plant oils, nourishing ferments and, of course, potent humectants that lock hydration in my skin.

It’s devoid of fragrance, fragrant plant oils, alcohol, silicons, and any other potential irritants that I want to avoid in my skin care. Honestly, Carmine’s Deep Hydration Fluid Treatment is the perfect formula!

IMG_9689.JPG

Here’s how cool the Mxt. technology is. The initial prescription for my Custom Hydration Fluid (I assume this is where the AI was working its magic) included a particular form of Hyaluronic Acid that I’d never heard of before. All I knew before now was that there are multiple molecular weights of HA — the larger are often found in pulpier serums, the smaller in lighter, often watery serums. The Mxt. AI was formulating with an HA molecule called 130 kDa Hyaluronic Acid. But I had the option in the personalization step to add in an additional HA molecule: 50 kDa Hyaluronic Acid.

I needed to know what all of this meant. So, of course, I googled it. I found an excellent article online titled Why Science Says Hyaluronic Acid Is the Holy Grail to Wrinkle-Free, Youthful Hydration. This fascinating explanation caught my eye:

“The benefits of hyaluronic acid on the skin has to do with its molecular weight and concentration. In this case, size matters! The molecular weight refers to its mass, or how big the HA molecule is. This is measured in something called unified atomic mass units — daltons, or kDa for short.

HA between 50 to 1,000 kDa is the most beneficial for skin, with about 130 kDa being the best, according to the most recent human studies. Anything higher won't make too much of a difference. Anything lower might cause inflammation. How did we get this number? When you look at studies, you'll see a pattern, but one of the most thorough studies looked at HA with different molecular weights, including 50, 130, 300, 800, and 2,000 kDa.

After one month, they found that treatment with 130 kDa HA was the most effective, increasing skin elasticity by 20 percent. Both the 50 and 130 kDa groups had significant improvement in wrinkle-depth and skin roughness after 60 days. All the other molecular weights still improved elasticity and skin hydration, just less so. You can read more about this molecular weight analysis from the original breakdown here.”

Amazing. Not even a week after my initial online experience with the Mxt. AI technology, I got my two treatments — my Custom Mixed Deep Hydration Fluid Treatment and a mild, soothing, aloe-infused cleansing gel.

My skin couldn’t be happier. If Uhura finds out, she’s gonna want it, too!

These two awesome summer textured eye creams get the Skincarma approval.

Oh, what about a summer eye cream?

What would a review of summer moisturizers be without a few quick recommendations for eye treatments. Heavier weighted eye creams in summer are just as goopy and uncomfortable around the eyes as a heavy moisturizer on the rest of your face. Yet, just like facial skin, the delicate skin in the eye area needs hydration, antioxidants, moisture and sunscreen, too!

Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Dew It Right Eye Gel

IMG_9009.jpg

The Hyaluronic Marine Dew It Right Eye Gel from Dr. Dennis Gross is a light, silky lotion that comes in an elongated, airless pump. Of course, no brand should ever — and I mean ever! — package an eye cream in a jar. So, I appreciate this first and foremost. Dr. Gross’s formula targets a multitude of concerns simultaneously, including puffiness, dehydration, dryness and fine lines.

It’s a nice blend of humectants, antioxidants, depuffing Caffeine Extract and even one of those Hanbang ingredients I mentioned with Hanyul — Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract to brighten the eye area. It’s got high levels of both Sodium Hyaluronate and Glycerin to help prevent water loss — and claims to keep skin hydrated for up to 72 hours. (No, I’m not testing that out either!)

One of the more, ahem, eye opening ingredients in the INCI is something called Sea Whip Extract. Like what?! Yet again, I had to Google it or I wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.

Sea Whip Extract is an “extract from a creature (Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae) that inhabits coral reefs, known for its skin-soothing properties, which makes it useful for all skin types, especially sensitive or redness-prone skin.”

Enough said.

Clinique Moisture Surge Eye 96-Hour Hydro-Filler Concentrate

IMG_9006.jpg

Ninety-six hours. For real. It’s come to this. Seventy-two hours wasn’t enough. New Moisture Surge Eye 96-Hour Hydro-Filler Concentrate takes it there. I have to admit, as outrageous as it sounds, it’s likely that Clinique is able to prove that their watery eye gel keeps eyes hydrated for that long. Not only would they not claim that if it weren’t true, they would certainly never put it in the product name and bring so much attention to it. Here’s the thing — the Moisture Surge Eye formula is actually front-loaded with humectants that do hold hydration in the skin by binding to water molecules and preventing evaporation. Humectants like Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin and Aloe Vera hold water molecules in place to keep skin hydrated — maybe even up to 96 hours!

In the top ten ingredients (make that 15 to account for the Aloe) are those three potent humectants. The other ingredients include three forms of replenishing algae and several skin-compatible hydators. Antioxidant Green Tea Leaf Extract is included in a high concentration too. It’s super lightweight and perfect in heat and humidity. And, imagine only needing to apply it twice a week. Hey, it’s summer, we all just wanna have fun!

Speaking of the sun, don’t forget sunscreen. Please.

None of this matters if you’re not shielding your skin from non-stop UV exposure when the sun is at its peak. Sun damage is always preventable and rarely reversible. I reviewed a terrific mattifying summer sunscreen in last week’s blog. Read about the MDSolarSciences Mineral 48 Creme and why I think it’s perfect for hot weather. Discover it here.

That’s it guys! I hope this was informative, insightful, and most importantly, helpful as you switch up your summer skin care. Take good care of your skin in the heat — and don’t forget to apply sunscreen!
