COOL CLEAN FACIAL SUNSCREENS TO KEEP US SAFE AND SMILING IN THE SUN!
IMG_2757.jpg

Well I’ve had quite a productive week in the new abnormal. I’m feeling particularly accomplished, having baked the best ginger snap cookie imaginable. At least in my mind!

All it took was a little honing of my baking skills and a whole lot of persistence. Baking was the easiest part; sourcing the ingredients during the Coronapocalypse was a near impossibility.

I found this really terrific ginger snap recipe in the All Recipes app that called for molasses, ground ginger, fresh ginger and crystallized ginger — not exactly necessities on a run to the market. Of course, I didn’t have any of those on hand. I have enough flour, sugar and vanilla extract to last me well into the apocalypse and beyond.

But crystallized ginger? I’m not even kidding when I say I scoured the market for 45 minutes until I found it. And I’m glad I did! The crystallized ginger made an otherwise mundane cookie into an otherworldly experience. Once again, the lesson that persistence pays off couldn’t be any clearer. Especially now!

IMG_2740.jpg

As is routine of late, I’ve been getting outside to both get and share homemade cookies, cupcakes and pie with friends who themselves need air. And the other day I realized I also missed sharing skin care with friends and began to ask whether anyone was running low on, say, moisturizer or Vitamin C serum. How about a mask to take your mind off of it all for a bit?

IMG_2934.jpg

Sure enough, good skin care is apparently as hard to come by as crystallized ginger! So, why not pair skincare products and baked goods? Suddenly, Skincarma is offering two-hour contactless curbside delivery!

I’ve now delivered desperately needed cookies and skincare products to several friends around Brooklyn. I’m committed to making this period fun and less awful than it otherwise would be.

And I’m happy to say that my most skeptical friend, Clark, who hates cakes, breads and anything with coconut in it, actually enjoyed the ginger snaps. I’m telling you those little bits of crystalized ginger are everything. (If you’d like my recipe, hit me up in the comments below — or DM me on my Skincarma IG page!)

Today, I’ll be delivering more skin care and slices of pineapple cake made with this wonderful cream cheese frosting infused with fresh pineapple juice. Hey, I’m on a roll.

IMG_2812.jpg

And now a little skincare talk…

With summer sun and longer days in the offing, I thought it was the perfect time to take a look at some cool new sunscreen discoveries I’ve made over the last few weeks. I haven’t reviewed facial sunscreen products in a min.

IMG_3135.jpg

The last time I did a full review of sunscreens was back at the end of July in an article entitled, Skincarma Approved: The Best Facial Sunscreen Products. That was then, this is now.

Since that time, I’ve reviewed a few innovative, well-formulated sunscreens here and there, including Time Traveler from my favorite clean sunscreen brand, Solara Suncare which I reviewed here.

It’s funny how fast sunscreen technologies change. No one does sunscreen innovation better IMO than Asian beauty brands. It’s a far more dynamic category outside the United States than inside the country given the fact that sunscreen filter technologies haven’t changed in the US since like 1875. I don’t know what that’s all about but it’s completely ridiculous.

Even more ridiculous is the fact that the US Food and Drug Administration is studying the adverse effects that chemical sunscreens may be having on our health. Now they’re coming to that conclusion? After 40-50 years?

IMG_3192.JPG

One recent article on the use of chemical sunscreens peaked my interest — in a big way! It was titled, When You Wear Sunscreen, You’re Taking Part in a Safety Study and appeared in The New York Times several months ago. The article, available here, described a study that appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which published the results of a randomized trial, conducted by the F.D.A. The purpose of the study was to determine, “whether the chemicals in four commercially available sunscreens are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.”

In fact, trace amounts of the chemicals were found in the blood of the participants. Four times a day, subjects of the study applied a chemical sunscreen formulated with one of the chemical sunscreens commonly used in US sunscreen products.

“All of the sunscreen chemicals were detected in concentrations that exceeded an F.D.A. threshold past which manufacturers are required to do further toxicology tests.”

If that isn’t reason enough to switch to a mineral sunscreen, I don’t know what is. With that, let’s have a look at five new facial sunscreens that have piqued my interest of late…

IMG_2080.jpg

Suntique I’m Pure Cica Suncream SPF 50 + | PA++++

I know I say it often, but it bears repeating over and over again. When people ask me my top recommendation for an anti-aging treatment, I simply reply…“Sunscreen!” As I alluded to earlier, Asian skincare brands kill it with the sun filter innovation — notably J-Beauty and K-Beauty brands.

IMG_1128.jpg

I’ve crowed for years about one of my all-time favorite sunscreens from Japanese brand Rhoto — the Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk that I reviewed in detail in my article about a complete $100 skincare routine. It’s not a straight up mineral formula; it’s more of a hybrid.

Wowed by sun filter technologies and innovative formulas from the world over, I was naturally intrigued by the relatively new Korean sun care brand, Suntique. I first discovered the indie brand while bouncing around NYC’s K-town a few months ago.

The K-beauty shops in K-town are an ample replacement for the shops in Seoul that are something nearing nirvana — and they’re a whole lot closer to home.

Replete with both well-known and obscure Korean skincare brands, I was literally a kid in a candy shop. Just like I was during my trip to Seoul several years ago, I was immersed in newness and bizarreness, with whacky sounding brands and absurdly named products — including the Suntique I'm Pure Cica Suncream.

IMG_1131.jpg

I’m Pure Cica Suncream is, of course, a mineral sunscreen formulated with the two physical filters Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. The clean formula has a light, but unusual texture that’s hard to legitimately describe in words. Dare I say it’s slimy as in snail slime slimy? I actually couldn’t find any snail mucin in the INCI. To see just how unusual it is to apply, you’ll want to check my corresponding vlog on my YouTube channel here.

Certainly, it’s non-sticky, non-greasy and leaves no white cast. (Are there any mineral sunscreens left out there that do leave a white cast?)

As the name implies, there is, in fact, soothing, hydrating Centella Asiatica Extract, or cica. And, true to any self-respecting K-beauty product, there are even ferments in the formula, including Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate.

Beyond that, there’s a bevy of terrific nourishing and antioxidant extracts and oils that deliver light moisture to the skin. If you’re oily, I’m Pure is your moisturizer. If you’re dry or normal, it’s best layered over a moisturizer as I do.

For good, clean fun in the sun, you can grab it on the Sokoglam website here for just $24.

First Aid Beauty Weightless Liquid Mineral SPF 30

IMG_1118.jpg

If you missed my brand review of First Aid Beauty last week, you can catch it here. Quite simply, FAB has some of the best formulas available for treating sensitive skin. The brand focuses on high concentrations of soothing actives to calm irritation, ingredients like Colloidal Oatmeal and Feverfew.

And, just in time, their newest product happens to be a clean mineral sunscreen that came out about a month ago.

The FAB Weightless Liquid Mineral SPF 30 is formulated with non-nano Zinc Oxide and, as the name implies, is super lightweight on the skin. In fact, it has more of a serum texture than that of a lotion. Of course since it’s tinted, it leaves no white cast.

One of the more notable actives in FAB’s clean formulation is Alteromonas Ferment Filtrate — an intriguing exopolysaccharide derived from marine bacteria. Notably, an in-vivo test on 15 subjects demonstrated that Alteromonas Ferment Filtrate improves hydration levels in the skin.

According to the experts at Paula’s Choice,

“Alteromonas is found in deep areas of seawater. Due to its polysaccharide structure, it has water-binding properties for skin and is reportedly a good soothing ingredient. There is preliminary information indicating that this ingredient also contributes to repairing skin's surface. As more research is done, it appears this ingredient holds even more promise for skin.”

IMG_1133.jpg

In addition, there’s a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, and skin-replenishing botanical extracts that infuse the skin with healthy nutrition. Two of them, Green Tea Extract and Licorice Root Extract have powerful antioxidant and benefits for the skin. Licorice Root Extract, in particular, is popular in traditional Korean Hanbang herbal medicine and a superb skin brightener.

About that tint. I’m always leery of tinted formulas, understandably concerned that I don’t appear to be wearing makeup.

I’m happy to report that not only are my drag days behind me (yes, there was a Halloween incident back in 1995), but it leaves behind no hint of makeup; rather my skin just appears a bit more even-toned. And because it’s so “watery,” it’s easily spreadable on application.

You can try it out for yourself on the Sephora website here for $34. Plus, explore all of First Aid Beauty’s clean skincare for sensitive skin here.

Does it matter if you always go for a product with an SPF 50?

SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays.

SPF 25 blocks 96% of UVB rays.

SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays.

SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays.

So, the difference between SPF 30 and 50 is about 1 percent. You decide. Remember, no sunscreen can block out 100% of UV rays — which is why it’s so important to apply throughout the day, when possible. What’s important is you find a product you love, and that you love to use.

Glow Getter Nutrient Boosted Daily Sunscreen SPF 30 (Naturally Scented)

The Solara Suncare Glow Getter is more of an all-over, head-to-toe sunscreen product, though IMO a well-formulated sunscreen should work on all exposed skin — whether it’s your face, legs or, well, your backside! (For the record, while I’m guilty of drag, I’ve never been to a nude beach.)

It doesn’t matter if it’s sunny, partly sunny, partly cloudy, raining, or snowing — sun protection is essential. What matters is that you’re sufficiently protected from the sun’s damaging UV rays. As a general rule:

If you can see the sun, the sun can see you!

IMG_7599.jpg

The best way to get into the habit of wearing sunscreen even on sunless, seemingly cloudy days, is to find one you love — and one you trust. That’s exactly the reason I’m so into Solara. I trust their clean, well-formulated skin care and sun care.

Solara Suncare checks all the boxes: it’s a 100% clean, non-toxic, good-for-skin mineral sunscreen based brand.

The brand was founded by fellow New Yorker Stephanie DiPisa who discovered, while on a family vacation on the Jersey Shore, that her 8-year-old son was allergic to the chemical sunscreen she had applied to his skin. She simply wanted to protect him and keep him from burning in the glaring summer sun.

Formulated with 99.99% plant origin ingredients, the Solara Glow Getter Nutrient Boosted Daily Sunscreen is a tad thicker than my go-to Time Traveler though it blends right in. Reasonably, after a few minutes, it leaves no discernible white cast.

IMG_1123.jpg

Glow Getter is packed with good-for-skin ingredients, as well as non-nano zinc at 20% for mineral sunscreen protection that effectively blocks out 97% of UVB rays .

There are a significant number of replenishing oils in this formula — the reason it’s a bit thicker than I expected and perhaps more suitable for the body. Personal preference is, of course, what matters.

Among the formula’s skin-loving oils are high levels of two powerful antioxidants, Coffee Seed Oil and Sunflower Seed Oil. In fact, there are so many antioxidant botanical oils and extracts I didn’t bother to count them. The INCI is comprised of at least 20 — including several that give the formula a light, refreshing, natural scent.

According to Solara,

“You’re already a Glow Getter, so here’s the skin protection to match your vibe. Our lightweight mineral SPF 30 moisturizer is a wake-up smoothie for your skin! A potent mix of botanicals and responsibly sourced mica help tone, illuminate and hydrate while protecting against everyday sun and digital + environmental pollution.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. And, as Solara notes, Glow Getter contains what the brand calls, “responsibly sourced mica” for a bit of complexion boosting iridescence. And what about that .01% of the formula that’s not of plant origin? Stephanie shared with me that it’s Potassium Sorbate, a mild preservative used in skincare formulas as an alternative to parabens.

Check out the full range of Solara Suncare products here. And for a chance to win a tube of Glow Getter, scroll down to the bottom of the blog and enter the Solara giveaway. (Thank you, Stephanie!)

Coola Mineral Sun Silk Crème SPF 30

As far as clean mineral sunscreens go, it doesn’t get any coolah than this. I laugh every time I see the brand Cool as it reminds me of an old college friend from the Boston area who couldn’t pronounce an “R” at the end of a word if you paid her. I can hear her yelling across the quad now, “Cahhhhhmine, meet me fuh dinnah!”

IMG_1121.jpg

Coola is one of those brands that doesn’t seem to get enough love. So I’m here to show it some!

The Coola Mineral Sun Silk Crème SPF 30 is an oil-free formula that has an even more watery texture than the FAB liquid sunscreen I reviewed earlier. In fact, it’s quite similar to the Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk. So let me put my copywriter hat on here and suggest it be renamed to bring it more in line with the formula texture. I’m renaming it Clean Silky Milky Sun Serum SPF 30. (No charge, Coola, it’s on me!)

Indeed, as the brand claims, it “glides on for a transparent veil, with sun, digital, and pollution protection.” It’s an excellent formula — vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free — with a 15% concentration of non-nano Zinc Oxide for an SPF of 30 that will block out 97% of UV rays. The first ingredient is actually Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, in place of water — which I love!

IMG_1125.jpg

There are a couple of antioxidant botanicals as well as a tiny amount of Niacinamide — which I estimate to be between one and two percent. Perhaps the most intriguing active in the INCI is Jasminum Sambac Leaf Cell Extract, a derivative of Indian Jasmine and a non-fragrant component of the botanical.

I’d never heard of the flower, but a quick Google search uncovered that Indian Jasmine is a traditional offering to the gods. I mean, wow. Okay then. That’s a nice bonus, huh?

Of course, since it’s a clean formula, what’s not in it is as important as what is. Coola’s Mineral Sun Silk Crème is free of sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban, and contains less than one percent of synthetic fragrances. This product is also vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free.

If you’re in need of an offering to the gods, the Coola Mineral Sun Silk Crème is available on the Sephora website. Plus, explore all of Coola’s super cool, clean sunscreens here.

Seriously Fab Fresh Greens SPF Mist

How much do I love a good mineral sunscreen? And, as you know, I’m a sucker for a good product name, too. Seriously Fab’s fabulously named Zinc it Over Fine + Sheer Sunscreen Mist is actually a seriously well-formulated mineral sunscreen that I’ve really gotten into over the last couple of weeks.

IMG_1120.jpg

In fact, there are several options available with light scents like Fresh Greens, Lavender Bliss and Citrus Passion and a simple unscented version. I waver between that one and the Fresh Greens, which has the delicate aroma of fresh-cut grass.

Which takes me back to the one chore I despised as a kid — mowing the lawn. Fresh cut grass should be freshly cut by someone who enjoys cutting grass. That certainly wasn’t me. Alas, the scent does bring me back.

Seriously Fab’s clean, 100% natural facial sunscreen formulas make it easy to reapply during the day, which I always feel guilty abut not doing consistently. Each of the four contains Zinc Oxide at a five-percent concentration for an SPF 25, which blocks out about 95% of the sun’s UV rays if used on its own. Because of that, I recommend it as an on-the-go touch-up during the day, rather than as your sole daily sunscreen product.

IMG_1124.jpg

Zinc it Over is formulated with several nourishing and replenishing actives, including high levels of nourishing Shea Butter and Rice Extract — as well as organic humectant Aloe Vera Leaf Extract.

It’s a super lightweight, non-greasy milky mist that melts invisibly into the skin. Finally, I have a portable sunscreen that’s easy to use — and that I can take with me into the City when and where I need it most.

Each of the Zinc it Over formulas is available from the brand’s website here. In fact, the brand offers two convenient sizes, including a three-ounce bottle for $42 and a more convenient, 1.6 oz. to-go version for $26.

Supergoop! Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream SPF 40

To me, there’s no more neglected area of the face than the eye area. Sure, most people either use a dedicated eye cream or simply use their facial moisturizer around their eyes. There’s nothing wrong with that — in fact, it’s smart.

IMG_6389.jpg

Unless you have a concern for dark circles and puffiness, a well-formulated facial moisturizer is all you need. Except, of course when it comes to sunscreen.

And that’s my point. Most people I know, and many of them my age, don’t take proper care of their eye area. And, I’m sorry to say, it shows.

Unless you have a concern for dark circles and puffiness, a well-formulated facial moisturizer is all you need. Except, of course sunscreen. And that’s my point.

Most people I know, and many of them my age, don’t take proper care of their eye area. And, I’m sorry to say, it shows. The skin around the eyes is the most delicate on the face. And that’s why the first signs of aging on your face occur around your eyes. It’s the direct result of a lack of sun protection — something delicate skin needs most.

IMG_6391.jpg

So why don’t more people use sunscreen in their eye area? Because they’ve been burned! Traditional chemical based sunscreens tend to migrate into the eyes — and, yeah, that burns. But it’s no reason to give up and not protect eye-area skin from damaging UV rays. It should be the impetus to find an SPF product that works in the eye area by staying put. Great eye treatments with sunscreen are hard to find.

For years now, I’ve used the SkinCeuticals Physical Eye UV Defense SPF 50. It’s got a putty like texture that stays in place.

So I’m super excited to share that I’ve found another one! The Supergoop! Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream SPF 40 is a terrific mineral-sunscreen formula. Bright-Eyed is made with a non-nano, Zinc Oxide complex that includes a blend of probiotics, antioxidants and caffeine for a bit of de-puffing.

IMG_8401.jpg

Bright-Eyed has a slight illuminating tint to it that helps to minimize the look of dark circles — which, incidentally, are often a result of inadequate sun protection. It’s a damn solid formula…and it stays put!

The Supergoop! Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream is available on the Sephora website for $42. Never mind an offering to honor the gods; consider honoring your eye area with a daily sunscreen! Explore all of Supergoop’s clean sun care products for face and body here.

SHOP THE BLOG: Purchase the Supergoop! Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream for $36 here.

That’s it guys. I hope you are faring well during the quarantine. This too shall pass — and before you know it, we’ll all be running around in the sun again. Be prepared.
