PRODUCT REVIEW: KIEHL’S VITAL SKIN-STRENGTHENING HYALURONIC ACID SUPER SERUM – ANTI-AGING FACE SERUM WITH ADAPTOGENIC HERBS
KIEHL’S | VITAL SKIN-STRENGTHENING HYALURONIC ACID SUPER SERUM
I was super excited to try Kiehl’s new Vital Skin-Strengthening Hyaluronic Acid Super Serum (love the name!). It sounds like an intriguing product, right?
Well it is, though I wasn’t quite sure what exactly it was — not a lot of brands target skin strengthening as a primary benefit.
The Vital Skin-Strengthening Hyaluronic Acid Super Serum has a really cool, milky texture that reminds me of the new Paula’s Choice CBD-powered Skin Transformative Treatment Milk.
While both formulas target pressed skin, the Kiehl’s “Super Serum” relies on a proprietary blend of adaptogens rather than Cannabidiol.
So what is it exactly? Kiehl’s describes it as “a skin-strengthening serum that protects against skin-aging stressors and visibly correct signs of aging.” That’s a lot to say that it deeply hydrates skin and calms irritation — though I’m not certain that second part is the case.
Why? Because it contains quite a few known skin irritants, including a very high level of denatured alcohol at ingredient no. 4! There are also multiple fragrant plant oils that I try to avoid in my skin care like Orange Peel Oil, Limonene, Geranium Oil and the dreaded Lavender Oil. Fragrance isn’t skin care and doesn’t belong on your face — particularly if you are sensitive to it.

The interesting thing here is the fact that the formula contains those adaptogenic herbs — red ginseng root, holy basil, and Schisandra berry — that may offset the irritation from the fragrance components of the formula.
Kiehl’s added in a low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid in the form of Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate. And I assume the purpose of the denatured alcohol is to force the humectant into the skin — which is something of a double edged sword.
I do love the texture and herbaceous smell. If your skin isn’t sensitized to essential oils, you’ll likely love the Super Serum.
