I’ve been a fan of Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner since the early 2000s — even before I started working at Kiehl’s as their first-ever copywriter. I always thought it was a bit of an unsung hero among Kiehl’s legacy products — that is, products that have been in the range for decades and that may not seem very fresh and modern.
Calendula Toner has a place among a select few of these Kiehl’s favorites, including Blue Astringent Herbal Toner, Creme de Corps, Lip Balm #1 and Ultra Facial Moisturizer. But it never really garnered the attention it deserves, existing in the shadow of those big products icons — many of them with huge fan bases. In fact, Andy Warhol was a fan of Blue Astringent! It wasn’t until Kiehl’s became popular throughout Asia — especially in Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Mainland China — that Calendula Toner was finally recognized as the great formula it is, and always was.
All these years later, I’m excited to experience the new Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream! It’s very likely intended to satisfy the desires of those same Asian fans of Calendula Toner that Kiehl’s has extended the beloved calendula formula into a lightweight gel-cream — the precise type of hydrating moisturizer popular in A-Beauty. It’s available worldwide, and good thing because it’s perfect for all skin types in any climate, but particularly in hot, humid weather. Calendula Water Cream has a soothing, melty texture that absorbs instantly, which I love.

It’s formulated with Calendula Flower Extract and, apparently, hundreds of micronized calendula petals in each jar. Though I don’t get the point of micronized flower petals, it does smell fresh and herbaceous like, I dunno, fresh picked marigolds — aka calendula!
Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream contains several soothing botanical extracts, including Bisabolol, the active component of chamomile proven to have potent anti-irritation benefits on the skin. It’s been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries — and the perfect Kiehl’s “old-world apothecary” ingredient.
