NEW SUNSCREENS I'M CRUSHING ON FOR FALL - BEST MINERAL SUNSCREENS FOR FACE FROM FARMACY, PURITO AND MORE!
IMG_3729.jpg

Summer may not be officially over, but it sure feels like it’s in the rearview mirror! It cooled down significantly in the City over the past few days — and I couldn’t be happier.

But it wasn’t entirely a joyful, carefree week. Orpheus had his annual teeth cleaning; and as he’s gotten older, it’s become an annual teeth pulling, too. Because he was going to be put under for the surgery, it meant he couldn’t have any food after midnight the night before.

The early morning before this yearly visit is the worst. He’s no dummy. He knows something’s amiss when he hasn’t had breakfast within 10 minutes after our six feet hit the floor. And the only day of year that’s the case, is vet day! Orpheus hates vet day. (Funny, he probably thinks he’s the only one who hates it.)

This was a particularly notable dental visit as two of the three teeth that showed signs of decay were his top two incisors — his fangs. I was so sad to hear they had to come out. Certainly, they’ve been his pride and joy; I’m gonna miss those love bites. But all turned out okay and he’s as healthy as ever. In fact, I’d venture to say that his teeth are in better shape than mine!

So, while I was planning to go up to Connecticut for lunch with my mother yesterday, there was no way I could leave my distressed child during his post-surgery recovery. So, she traveled to Brooklyn for lunch instead.

So, the week was full of highs and lows, which I guess felt oddly like life in balance.

IMG_3726.jpg

The skincare stuff starts here.

With the change of seasons upon us, I start thinking about changing up my skin care. Usually that means heavier formulas — and the embracing of facial oils all over again. There are very few things about the colder months that I look forward to. Among my cold weather pleasures are basketball games, homemade soups and skin care.

Skin care? How could I look forward to skin care when I use it all year round? Well, because there are products I don’t and can’t use all year round. Like the aforementioned facial oils, which I love. But specifically, there are individual products that just aren’t comfortable on the skin on warm days that I know will bring me great pleasure over the next few weeks.

Skincare products are like clothing. I look forward all year to “hoodie weather” between late September and late March — when I can break out all my fun hoodies and sweatshirts. We’re brushing right up against that now in NYC. Last night was one of those cool nights where I was able to leave the windows open and Orpheus and I slept with a light, delicate breeze wafting over us throughout the night.

IMG_3617.jpg

The one product I consider indispensable all year round is sunscreen. It saddens me (it really does!) that so many people only wear sunscreen when it’s sunny out — and very often only in the summer months. That’s just absurd. Sunscreen is vital every day. A simple truth I live by: if you can see the sunlight, the sun can see you. Sunscreen is the most valuable anti-aging product available to us — all year round.

In my days working at Kiehl’s, we had a saying that has always stuck with me:

“It is essential to wear sunscreen even on cloudy seemingly sunless days.”

I believe that to this very day.

So, let’s take a look at some of my favorite sunscreens to keep skin healthy and protected in the months ahead.

IMG_3516.jpg

Ghost Democracy | Invisible Lightweight Daily Face Sunscreen

I first reviewed the clean indie brand Ghost Democracy early this year in an article titled, Brands I Love: Ghost Democracy Intriguingly Clean Skincare with a Twist. (You can catch it here.) It was soon after the brand launched with a big, “clean beauty” splash — and I’ve enjoyed every single ghostly drop!

I’ve made no secret of what I think of the brand’s Lightbulb Vitamin C Serum. It’s become one of my all-time favorite Vitamin C treatments to brighten the complexion — and the benchmark for what I want from an oil-based Vitamin C treatment: a high Vitamin C concentration, skin-replenishing non-fragrant plant oils, skin-soothing actives — and a clean, toxin-free formula. The Ghost Democracy Lightbulb Vitamin C Serum is one of the best Vitamin C serums for face. The stuff is literally “nirvana in a bottle.”

IMG_3243.jpg

So, I was super excited when Ghost Democracy introduced a clean mineral sunscreen this past month.

The Ghost Democracy Invisible Lightweight Daily Face Sunscreen has been one of my go-to daily sunscreens over the last three weeks.

I’ve been juggling between this and the others reviewed on the blog (as well as a few that didn’t make the cut!). But I’ve looked forward to the Ghost Democracy sunscreen the most.

And, as summer fades, the Invisible Lightweight Daily sunscreen is the perfect daily sunscreen for the chillier fall months. Why is that? Because it’s got just the right texture for fall – not too light, not too thick. That’s what I want in my transitional skincare as the hot summer months begin to cool down here in New York City.

What’s the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens?

For some real insights, there’s an excellent article by the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, Mineral vs. Synthetic Sunscreen Ingredients available here. In the piece, the experts explain the differences and benefits between mineral and chemical sunscreens — and even dispel a myth or two:

“The two types of sunscreen ingredients are mineral and synthetic [chemical], and both are equally protective. Further reassuring is that each can be included in formulas created for every skin type. For example, if you have normal to oily skin, there are weightless, non-greasy options; if you have normal to dry skin, it’s possible to find skin-smoothing, hydrating SPF products.

What’s the Difference Between Mineral and Synthetic Sunscreen Ingredients?

The differences aren’t about which type is more effective; rather, it comes down to personal preference and how sensitive your skin is—mineral sunscreens are considered the most gentle options.

Mineral sunscreens: There are only two mineral sunscreen ingredients: titanium dioxideand zinc oxide. They work in skin's uppermost layers to both absorb and, to a lesser extent, deflect and scatter the sun’s harmful rays. These mineral ingredients are sometimes referred to as physical sunscreens or physical blockers, although that’s not a factual representation of how they work.
Synthetic sunscreens: There are over 30 synthetic sunscreen ingredients, all of which absorb into the top layers of skin, where they work similar to mineral sunscreens: by scattering and deflecting the sun’s harmful rays, and by converting UV rays into heat and “deactivating” them. (Don’t worry, you won’t feel a thing.) Common synthetic sunscreen ingredients include oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and avobenzone. These are sometimes labeled “chemical sunscreens,” which is both misleading and false. All skin care ingredients, even water, are chemicals.

IMG_3537.jpg

Like all of Ghost Democracy’s formulas, the Invisible Lightweight Daily Face Sunscreen is free of any sensitizing substances, including harmful preservatives, drying alcohol, fragrance and fragrant plant oils.

Ghost Democracy infused the formula with lots of goodness, the kind of stuff skin loves. Like 4.0% Niacinamide to clear out pores. And antioxidants like Artichoke Leaf Extract and Turmeric Extract that protect skin from environmental damage and work with the Niacinamide to brighten the complexion.

Of course, what counts most is the 20.0% Zinc Oxide and the fact that the Invisible Lightweight sunscreen is indeed invisible! As with the best mineral sunscreens, it takes a minute to settle into the skin, but once it does, you’re good to go.

The Invisible Lightweight Daily Face Sunscreen works well for all skin types — in my estimation. If you’re oily, you can actually use just this without an extra moisturizer. It doesn’t contain any plant oils but does contain caprylic/capric triglyceride — a derivative of coconut oil and glycerin that’s both emollient and replenishing without being excessively oily on the skin.

Farmacy | Green Defense Daily Mineral Sunscreen

I’ve had a secret crush on Farmacy Beauty for years. Every winter, one of my favorite dry skin treats is the Farmacy Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask. If you haven’t experienced Honey Potion, you’re really missing out. It’s super gooey, super soothing and superbly nourishing on the skin. When my skin is dry, irritated, uncomfortable — and looking like it — Honey Potion works its magic to ease my complexion back to a healthy vibrancy.

Get yourself a pot here before the cold sets in!

IMG_1591.jpg

I recently reviewed Farmacy’s Deep Sweep 2% BHA Pore Cleaning Toner in my article about the best exfoliating toners titled, Acid Toners – Some of the Best BHA / AHA Toners for Face from Paula's Choice, Farmacy and More. (You can catch the full piece here.)

It’s a terrific, clean formulation with an ideal pH level — right in the range for its beneficial acids to exfoliate the skin. That’s not something I can say about many treatments formulated with Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid — including two of them that I reviewed in the article. Boo on them! All too often, they’re way off the mark, minimally effective — and bordering on nonsensical skin care. There’s certainly a lot of that out there.

But not from Farmacy! The Deep Sweep formula effectively exfoliates the skin and deep cleans (make that sweeps!) pores, clearing them of any build-up that can stretch them out and make them appear more visible.

Farmacy just gets it. It’s a cool name, but what’s the brand about? Well, that pure ingredients matter; that clean formulas matter. When these things are prioritized by a brand, skin care can truly benefit the skin. Farmacy locally sources and cultivates pure, natural ingredients for its clean skin care. And I’m consistently wowed by the brand’s products.

“Farmacy explores local farms around the world in pursuit of unique ingredients that deliver unparalleled freshness and potency.

Knowing the source of its key ingredients means that Farmacy can vouch for the quality of its clean ingredients. Farmacy has partnered with organic farms in New York, Pennsylvania, and, most recently, with a farm in Northeast Brazil.”

IMG_3524.jpg

So, of course, I was excited when Farmacy recently came out with a new, clean mineral sunscreen — the Green Defense Daily Mineral Sunscreen.

To start, Green Defense is thicker than I was expecting. Surprisingly so — and the precise reason it’s perfect for a collection of seasonal sunscreens.

The first time I slathered it on, I worried that it would leave a white cast. How could it not; it’s kinda thick and has a glowy iridescence to it. But, it blended right in and left me with a nice, healthy radiance.

It’s an interesting formula. With a combination of the two common mineral filters, Zinc Oxide (5.82%) and Titanium Dioxide (2.4%), it offers broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection — which will defend skin against 97% of UV rays. But it’s so much more than just its mineral sunscreen filters.

Green Defense is a wonderful melange of beneficial botanical extracts and nourishing oils. Some are expected, like the Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil and Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil. But, there are several natural extracts that I’ve rarely, if ever, seen in a skincare INCI! These include: Echinacea Purpurea Root Extract, Aronia Melanocarpa Fruit Extract, and Hydrolyzed Verbascum Thapsus Flower.

IMG_3525.jpg

Echinacea, of course, is a natural treatment for the common cold. I’ll assume it has some sort of detoxifying effect in addition to offering antioxidant protection. Verbascum Thapsus Flower, commonly known as mullein, is able to “harvest UV radiation and transform it into new visible light to appear brighter, becoming more visible in the meadow and therefore, having a greater chance to attract insects.” Wild, right?

But the Aronia Melanocarpa Fruit Extract, or Black Chokeberry, is most intriguing to me. I knew I’d seen it once before and recalled that I came across it in the COSRX Triple C Lightning Liquid. It’s a terrific antioxidant, and more.

What is black chokeberry?

Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) fruits are among the richest sources of polyphenols and anthocyanins in plant kingdom and suitable raw material for production of functional foods. The popularity of chokeberries is not only due to their nutritional value but also to the constantly emerging evidence for their health-promoting effects.

The current study presents detailed information about the content and composition of sugars, organic acids, and polyphenols in 23 aronia samples…Organic acids were represented by substantial amounts of quinic acid, malic acid, and ascorbic acid.

All this to say that while Farmacy’s Green Defense Daily Mineral Sunscreen is defending skin against environmental damage with effective UV filters and antioxidants, it’s restoring and promoting skin health with nourishing natural substances.

Green Defense is everything you want in a mineral sunscreen — and more. It’s perfect for slathering on in the morning and hitting the ground running. Seriously, unless your skin is super dry, it’s all you need in a moisturizer, too!

Purito | Comfy Water Sun Block

I’m a long-time fan of Purito, having first reviewed the clean, natural Korean skincare brand in an article titled, Brands I Love: Purito, the Best Clean Skincare from the World of K-Beauty, which you can catch here.

There are so many products from Purito that I love and that have become regular go-to’s. Among them the Purito From Green Cleansing Oil and the Purito Galacto Niacin 97 Power Essence. I reach for both of these with glee multiple times each week.

But Purito’s silky niacinamide serum, the Galacto Niacin 97 Power Essence, seems like a gift from the future! I can imagine Uhura using it on the Starship Enterprise to unclog her pores and keep her complexion clear. It contains a 92% concentration of nourishing fermented ingredients with a conservative level of 5% niacinamide. It’s one of my favorites and one of the best natural niacinamide serums for face.

IMG_4707.jpg

When it comes to sunscreens, hands down, my favorite sunscreen products come from the worlds of K-beauty and A-beauty.

Purito’s Centella Green Level Safe Sun has been a fave of mine over the past year or more. It’s one of the best clean sunscreens for face that I’ve come across. But there’s a catch. It’s not a mineral sunscreen, it’s chemical; and I generally prefer mineral formulas over chemical ones.

For some time, I’ve had my eye on the Purito Comfy Water Sun Block — a clean mineral sunscreen for face formulated with both Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide for an ultra-protective formula with an SPF 50+ and a PA++++ value, the highest UVA rating.

I know that most of us in the West have been conditioned to rely on the SPF value of a sunscreen product. And most of us understand that at minimum, we need to use an SPF 30 each morning — but an SPF 50 is ideal, effectively blocking 98% of UV rays. As I understand it, the FDA doesn’t allow a claim above SPF 50, so a plus symbol is used to indicate that the UVB protection exceeds 50. It could actually be SPF 51 or SPF 101!

IMG_3519.jpg

The PA value, on the other hand, specifically measures defense against the more insidious, skin-aging UVA rays; but it’s not recognized by the FDA. I believe it’s a rating system that was developed by the Japanese equivalent to the U.S. FDA — and is recognized across Asia. That’s why you always see it in both K-beauty and A-beauty products.

What does PA mean in sunscreen?

There’s an excellent piece from the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, What Does the PA+ Sunscreen Symbol Mean? on the brand’s website here.

The SPF rating on a sunscreen bottle stands for Sun Protection Factor, a measurement of how long you can stay outside during the day and be protected from the sun’s burn-causing UVB rays (assuming you’re applying sunscreen the right way). UVA rays are present, too; this is where the PA+ rating system comes into play.

Some sunscreens include PA+ rating on their products. The letters “PA” followed by plus signs (PA+, PA++, PA+++, and PA++++) on a label are a rating system developed in Japan to represent how much UVA protection the product offers.

The sun’s UVA rays do not cause sunburn; rather, they cause skin to turn brown. UVA rays are known as the sun’s silent killers because you don’t feel them affecting skin. Despite the lack of pain associated with UVA rays, they penetrate deeply into skin, causing a somewhat different type of damage than UVB rays.

This is what each PA rating means:

PA+ = Some UVA protection.
PA++ = Moderate UVA protection.
PA+++ = High UVA protection.
PA++++ = Extremely High UVA protection.

The Purito Comfy Water Sun Block is the lightest of the products I’m reviewing in my seasonal sunscreen collection. So while it’s not one of the heavier sunscreens that I’m focused on for the change of seasons, not every day is chilly.

IMG_3528.jpg

Today, for instance, it’s in the low 80s in NYC. Here it’s possible for us to experience hot, summery days sporadically well into October. And I know, too, that not everyone’s skin is like mine. If you’re oily all year round, or during most of the year, Purito’s Comfy Water sunscreen is one of the best mineral sunscreens for oily skin.

True to its name, it’s got a super-lightweight texture, though it’s no where near as watery as the Rohto Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk. Speaking of Star Trek, I often joke that the Skin Aqua milky sunscreen feels like it’s formulated with alien technology! (Hey, can someone beam me down a case of it?!)

Comfy Water is much more down to earth. It’s got what I estimate to be a 3%-5% concentration of pore-clearing, skin barrier-strengthening antioxidant niacinamide. And it’s a fantastic formula — definitely one of the best natural mineral sunscreens I’ve come across.

The Purito Comfy Water Sun Block is available on the Yesstyle website where it gets 4.5 stars out of 5. I love how well this one reviewer sums up her experience with Comfy Water — and sunscreens in general:

“A wonderful build-able product.

I have dry, sensitive, and acne prone skin that does not react well to fragrances or chemical type sunscreens. A lot of safe mineral sunscreens I've tried have been heavy with either oils or silicones, so I inevitably break out (not to mention look like a ghost the whole day); thankfully this one is so lightweight I haven't had issues like that at all. It spreads very smoothly like a light lotion, and the white cast is minimal even for my olive-tan skin tone! I'm so glad to have given Purito a chance!”

IMG_3526.jpg

In addition to the much-welcome Niacinamide, Comfy Water contains a skin-strengthening blend of Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, and Asiatic Acid — all components of the super-soothing centella asiatica plant. Seriously, good stuff, Purito!

Skinnies | Sungel SPF 30

I consider sunscreen the most important skincare product I apply every day. And I’ve made it my mission to seek out the best sunscreen products the world over — having them shipped to me illegally. In the U.S., sunscreen products are considered drugs and it’s apparently illegal to ship them over the border. But who cares? I sure don’t.

There’s been a lot of innovation in the marketplace for sunscreens but, regrettably, it’s all happened outside the U.S. So contraband sunscreens it is!

IMG_0966.jpg

For over a year, I’ve amassed some of the best facial sunscreen products from Asia and Europe — and in the case of the Rohto Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk, from other planets.

Thank goodness for the internet or I’d be using sunscreen technology that dates back to the 80s. The only sunscreen innovation in the U.S. has come with clean, mineral sunscreens like my fave Time Traveler from Solara Suncare.

While innovation in the U.S. is moving too damn slow, the rest of the world is bringing a lot of coolness and newness. The latest sun filters are driven by A-beauty — with Uvinul A Plus and other filters that protect skin from the most insidious aging UVA rays.

In general, one of the coolest trends in skincare is the removal of a single ingredient that often comprises up to 60-75% of a skincare product: water. Water is, in fact, useless to the skin and doesn’t offer much to a skincare product either. It’s simply a waste of money — and a waste of precious resources.

IMG_0967.jpg

So I’m thrilled to introduce Skinnies, a New Zealand-based brand that’s created waterless sunscreens! I’ve been using the Skinnies Sungel SPF 30 for over a month and am quite surprised by the formula.

It’s thicker than I could imagine, but a little goes a long way. And, because it’s so thick, it’s perfect for colder weather — and ideal for winter.

The water-free Skinnies Sungel is a clean, vegan formula that relies on chemical sun filters for broad-spectrum protection.

What’s most interesting to me is its staying power. With most sunscreens, when I get home from a long day in the City, I know much of it is gone from my face. And gone with it? The anti-aging protection I had when I left the apartment in the morning! With the waterless Skinnies Sungel, there’s still a veil on my skin at day’s end. How cool is that?

MDSolarSciences | Mineral Tinted Sunscreen Stick SPF

One of the mistakes we all make is to apply sunscreen to our faces in the morning and not think about sun protection again until the following day. The truth is, most sunscreens are absorbed, evaporate, rub off or get watered down by sweat throughout the day. By midday, there may not be much protection left — and if there is, it’s unlikely to be uniform, meaning some areas of your face remain protected while others are exposed. For the eye area, that can be particularly disastrous.

So, a handy sunscreen product that’s easily carried around and can be reapplied midday as a touch-up is certainly welcome. And the MDSolarSciences Mineral Tinted Sunscreen Stick SPF 30 is exactly what you need to assure you’ve got ample sun protection at 2 p.m. — much like you did at 8 a.m.

IMG_3530.jpg

I first reviewed the MDSolarSciences brand last summer in my piece titled, Brands I Love: MD Solar Sciences Doctor-Developed Facial Sunscreen Products, available here.

MDSolarSciences was founded by dermatologic oncologist Dr. Robert J. Friedman.

The brand’s sunscreen products are top-rated by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) — with four formulas receiving the coveted rating of “1”. Among the four is the brand’s workhorse and a personal favorite, the Mineral Crème SPF 50.

The Mineral Tinted Sunscreen Stick is a superb formula with what the brand refers to as a “universally flattering light tint that easily applies to your skin and is perfect for on-the-go use.” It seems so much darker in the tube than it actually appears on the skin. In fact, it blends in nicely and doesn’t (miraculously!) look like makeup when I’ve got it on. How that can be true is lost on me. But it’s gratifying.

IMG_3531.jpg

The formula contains a blend of mineral sun filters with Titanium Dioxide (8.25%) and Zinc Dioxide (6%). It’s a simple sunscreen touch-up, an uncomplicated formula that feels really comfortable on the skin. And, it makes a great sunscreen for the eye area!
