THE YEAR’S BEST VITAMIN C SERUMS WITH PAULA'S CHOICE, SUNDAY RILEY, THE INKEY LIST AND MORE!

IMG_2547.jpg

Twenty twenty-one is finally here! That means a new, fresh start. Yes, it’s somewhat symbolic — if it weren’t for the change in the year, nothing actually changed. I’m not in denial about that.

But intentions, mindset, energy matter. So I’m focusing on the new and striving to stay positive!

As wild as it is to say, I’ve actually gotten my migraines under control. I haven’t experienced a full blown migraine in at least two weeks now. A year ago, it was 25 or more a month, nearly every day.

That’s fully thanks to the groundbreaking Cefaly device that I began using in earnest just before Thanksgiving. When I start to feel any sort of discomfort in my head indicating the potential for a migraine attack, I reach for my Cefaly and it calms the jittery, sensitive Trigeminal nerve — the main cranial nerve that’s responsible for the majority of migraine attacks.

It’s really been nothing short of a miracle. So I’m kicking off 2021 with a miracle! How cool is that?

IMG_4611.jpg

The skincare stuff starts here.

There are two ingredients that I wish everyone on Earth who’s serious about their skin health would incorporate into their own skincare routines — Vitamin C and Niacinamide. Both are indispensable antioxidants — and more. In the case of a good Vitamin C treatment, it can be one of the best anti-aging serums in your arsenal.

Last spring, I published an article about my favorite Vitamin C serums in a piece titled, New Vitamin C Facial Serums I Love But You’ve Probably Never Heard Of!which you can catch here. It was a collection of some of the best Vitamin C serums, all of which were relatively new to the market, and new to me.

Among my top picks were some of my favorite brightening serums to this day, including the clean, oil-based Ghost Democracy Lightbulb Vitamin C Serum with an 18% concentration of Vitamin C. It’s literally the crème de la crème for me.

IMG_8553.jpg

My selection also included the all-natural Purito Pure Vitamin C Serum. If you’re sensitive to higher levels of Vitamin C, Purito’s serum contains a modest 5% concentration of it. And it just might be what you’re looking for.

(In spite of the brand’s recent controversy over the erroneous, inflated claim on its Centella Green Level Safe Sun SPF 50+, the brand’s natural formulations are quite good. I’m a #puritofanboy and will remain so.)

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that Vitamin C serums are like precious gems to me. Until recently, Vitamin C was perhaps the most under-appreciated of all skincare ingredients. Mainly because it seemed to be old news. And, because it’s been nearly impossible to keep the vitamin stable in a skincare formula, the truly effective levels weren’t possible. Until you get to ten percent or more, you don’t really get the power brightening, collagen building benefits of the active.

As the science has progressed, there are now Vitamin C serums with super high concentrations of the antioxidant powerhouse — like the Allies of Skin 35% Vitamin C Collagen Rebuilding Serum. Thirty-five percent still seems crazy to me. I’m not convinced to this day that it’s even necessary. At least for me, levels that high turn my complexion hot pink for an hour or so.

What does Vitamin C do for skin?

There’s an excellent article on the remarkable benefits of Vitamin C for the skin from the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, What is Vitamin C and How Does it Benefit Skin?

Vitamin C is one of the most exciting, research-proven ingredients you can apply to skin (1). This water-soluble antioxidant is a natural component of healthy skin. When we’re young, vitamin C levels in skin’s outermost two layers (epidermis and dermis) are abundant, but as we age, these levels naturally deplete. Unprotected sun exposure (UV damage) and pollution can accelerate this decline, leading to skin looking and feeling dull, uneven, and less firm than it once was (2).

Luckily, there are topical skin care solutions that can help mitigate this damage, so skin looks and feels healthier and younger longer.

Vitamin C Benefits for Skin

Vitamin C’s benefits for skin are vast, including its ability to even out skin tone and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (3). While this powerhouse ingredient is well-known for its skin-brightening benefits, research also shows it can shield skin from the visible impacts of environmental stressors, including free radical damage (4). This synergy of mitigating problems both before and after they occur makes vitamin C a force to be reckoned with.

So, for me (and for skin everywhere) Vitamin C is everything! With that, let’s take a look at some of my favorite Vitamin C serums of the past year…

IMG_1692.jpg

Sunday Riley | C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum

I’m a big fan of Sunday Riley and really explored the brand in 2020. Two of my favorite Sunday Riley products are the Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment and the new Pink Drink Firming Essence.

(Psst…You can catch my review of Pink Drink on the blog here. And, my review of the Good Genes serum is here.)

Lactic+Acid+%2B+Licorice+Root+2.jpg

In my mission to experience every Vitamin C serum on Earth, I’ve finally availed myself of the opportunity to test out Sunday Riley’s iconic C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum.

Once I did, I had to ask myself if I was the last person to experience this amazing treatment. I wasn’t actually expecting anything particularly remarkable from it. But it does stand out among the gazillion Vitamin C treatments that I’ve tried — and is exceptional among the plethora of Vitamin C serums I’ve discovered of late.

The C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum has a silky, lightweight creamy texture and a very subtle citrus aroma that makes it such a pleasure to use.

It’s formulated with 15% Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate — a stable, oil soluble form of Vitamin C that’s considered to be the relative equivalent of pure Vitamin C, or Ascorbic Acid. According to the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team, “some researchers believe this form of vitamin C has a greater affinity for skin because its fatty acid component helps aid penetration. It pairs well with other forms of vitamin C and retinol for enhanced effectiveness.”

IMG_0487.jpg

Because of it’s lighter lotion texture, the C.E.O. serum actually works perfectly well as a moisturizer, too, with a high level of Squalane at about 10-12% of the formula by my estimation. In fact, because it’s so lightweight, I’d recommend it as a primary moisturizer for combination and oily skins. Normal and dry skin types will want to layer it beneath a heavier cream or a facial oil.

Am I a fan of the formula’s fragrant plant “essential” oils, including Limonene, Sweet Orange Oil and Tangerine Peel Oil? No, of course not. There’s actually nothing essential about them. Limonene is quite common in facial skincare, but the C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum contains a much higher concentration of Limonene than I normally see in an INCI. It’s a chemical component of natural fragrant ingredients, including citrus oils like lemon and species of the mint family.

IMG_0488.jpg

Again, these fragrant oils give the formula its lovely, sensorial aroma, but fragrance isn’t skincare. And, as I said, I do appreciate (even enjoy!) the subtle scent of the C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum. But that doesn’t mean it’s pro-skin health or even good for your skin.

It’s only good for your senses! If you have a sensitivity to fragrance and fragrant plant oils in your facial skincare, I would forego this one and opt for one of the fragrance free serums in this year’s rundown.

Perhaps to make up for it, Sunday Riley included what is referred to as a “phytosterols complex” that is purported to calm any sensitivity the fragrant components may cause in some.

Despite its fragrant faults, I really enjoy the C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum. Again, if you’re sensitive, you may want to take a look at other options in the blog.

Paula’s Choice | C15 Super Booster

I have made no secret of the fact that the Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster is my favorite skincare product. Quite simply, it’s the best Niacinamide serum on the market and the best anti-aging serum, too. To understand what makes it so exceptional for me, check out my blog article titled, Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster – The Best Niacinamide Serum To Brighten Skin And Clear Clogged Pores!

IMG_1634.jpg

But as much as I love that and so many other Paula’s Choice products, I hadn’t gotten around to trying the brand’s C15 Super Booster until very recently. I know that seems so odd, right? I feel like I’ve tried every Paula’s Choice product that the brand offers. I even wrote a blog article titled, Three Of The Best Paula's Choice Products That Make Me Purr Like Orpheus!

Make it four!

Yes, the Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster is that good. Of course it’s clean. But one of the things I love about the 10% Niacinamide Booster is its unique versatility. Both the 10% Niacinamide Booster and C15 Super Booster have super watery textures that make them easy to layer into any skincare routine. They’re best applied immediately following cleansing and toning so that they can be full absorbed into the skin’s layers unimpeded.

As the name indicates, it as a relatively high concentration of 15% Vitamin C. In the case of the C15 Super Booster, it’s in the form of Ascorbic Acid — the purest (and most unstable) form of the antioxidant powerhouse. In fact, the Ascorbic Acid is the second ingredient after water.

Which would normally give me pause — and did. Water is a Vitamin C destabilizer. A quick scan of the INCI and I find Vitamin C’s BFF, the antioxidant Ferulic Acid. The two are quite the pair and the Ferulic helps to keep the Vitamin C from breaking down. The air tight dropper component and opaque class bottle help as well.

Do Vitamin C and Niacinamide go together?

You know what else Vitamin C loves? Niacinamide. There is a huge skincare myth out there that the two powerful antioxidant vitamins don’t work well together. In fact, just the other day I was having a conversation with a friend and she mentioned that she’s afraid to use them in the same routine. Let’s put that myth to rest, shall we?

There’s an excellent article from the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, Can Niacinamide and Vitamin C Be Used Together? available on the brand’s site to read in full here. This is what I found most salient:

The studies showing incompatibility between niacinamide and vitamin C date back to the early 1960s (yes, that far). These studies were off from the start because they used non-stabilized forms of both ingredients, whereas both ingredients are typically stabilized when used in modern-day cosmetics formulas.

Niacinamide is a pretty “tough” ingredient; light and air don’t have the same effect on it as they do on antioxidants like vitamin C. What’s important for niacinamide is that the product be formulated at a pH that’s close to neutral. Vitamin C (pure ascorbic acid), on the other hand, does best in a low-pH (acidic) environment. However, nicotinic acid—the undesirable by-product of niacinamide and vitamin C—becomes an issue only when the niacinamide and vitamin C are combined in a high-temperature environment for a long time. That temperature is higher than you’d find in most at-home scenarios, including leaving a box of skin care products sitting outside in the sun for a couple of days.

Also, it’s important to point out that this concern applies only to pure vitamin C, not to its many other forms (such as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, and ascorbyl glucoside). So, to reiterate, combining ascorbic or l-ascorbic acid with niacinamide is fine.

In short, any studies that show a definite issue from combining niacinamide and vitamin C were conducted in an environment that does not reflect what average skin care products experience during development, manufacturing, or in real-world storage and usage.

So yes, use your Vitamin C and Niacinamide serums any time you want. I use them in both my AM and PM routines!

IMG_1644.jpg

There’s a whole lot more going on with the Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster than just the power pair of Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid. There’s humectant Sodium Hyaluronate as well as the skin-replenishing actives Vitamin E, Glycerin, Lecithin and Hexanoyl Dipeptide-3 Norleucine Acetate — a synthetic peptide that helps speed up desquamation (skin’s natural shedding process) for a consistently fresher looking complexion.

Notably, there are a pair of tried-and-true skin soothers to help ameliorate the irritation associated with a 15% concentration of Vitamin C, including Panthenol (Vitamin B5) and Bisabolol — the active component of chamomile.

Seriously, I don’t know what took me so long. The Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster is such a phenomenal option and one of the best Vitamin C serums for face.

Paula’s Choice | C25 Super Booster

Unlike with the Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster, I have actually tried this targeted treatment before — in its previous packaging iteration. Yes as indicated, the Paula’s Choice C25 Super Booster contains a 25% concentration of Vitamin C. But that doesn’t mean it should be your go-to.

IMG_1641.jpg

Think of the C25 Super Booster as a highly concentrated targeted treatment for brightening and even erasing dark spots.

C25 Super Booster has a thick, goopy texture that’s more like a putty than a serum, allowing it to stay in place. Its patented delivery system releases the Vitamin C throughout the day (or night) to attack dark spots, sun spots and age spots.

In fact, I have a dark spot on the back of my right hand that’s been there for years. Likely a sun spot, I never even tried to do much about it and have now begun to treat it with the C25 Super Booster. The problem is that I can’t seem to do it consistently enough to make any progress at lightening it effectively! Oh well.

It’s a relatively simple, clean formulation with just just eight ingredients in all. While it’s perfectly fine using it over broader areas for the treatment of wrinkles and dark patches, I wouldn’t recommend using the C25 Super Booster serum over your entire face. It’s just not made for that — and isn’t very comfortable.

BeautyStat | Universal C Skin Refiner

I actually included BeautyStat’s Universal C Skin Refiner in an earlier blog article about the best Vitamin C serums for face. But as with The Ordinary’s Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution, which I talk about below, I felt that no piece on excellent Vitamin C treatments would be complete without two of my regular go-to’s.

Quite simply, the BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner is a really, really well-formulated Vitamin C serum — and an absolute pleasure to use. And unlike Sunday Riley’s C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum, the BeautyStat Universal C is not a water-based serum. It’s more like a richly-textured, silky lotion — what’s termed a “suspension.” It also contains no fragrance or fragrant components.

IMG_1685.jpg

Universal C is formulated with a super high 20% concentration of L-Ascorbic Acid, the most potent form of Vitamin C.

That extraordinarily high amount of Vitamin C is delivered into the skin layers through BeautyStat’s proprietary, encapsulated delivery system to maximize efficacy.

The lightweight, silky and waterless Universal C formula also contains an intriguing active ingredient called Epigallocatechin Gallate (GCG).

GCG is the most important and effective component of antioxidant green tea. It also happens to perfectly sync up with Vitamin C for reliable, potent antioxidant protection that prevents skin damage. With just seven ingredients, the clean Universal C Skin Refiner formula has a very tight INCI, accounting for the fact that Vitamin C doesn’t play well with other actives.

The first ingredient in Universal C is Cyclopentasiloxane, an innocuous, lightweight silicone that forms the formula base and helps to prevent oxidation. Plant-derived Squalane, a bio-available substance recognized by the skin, helps to nourish and moisturize.

The Beauty Stat Universal C is so innovative, it’s patented!

The Beauty Stat Universal C is so innovative, it’s patented!

And, the addition of Tartaric Acid in the formula helps to balance skin’s pH as it enhances absorption of the other actives. Tartaric Acid is one of the six alpha hydroxy acids and is found in many plants, including grapes and tamarinds. It’s also one of the main component acids in wine.

The fact that Universal C is packaged in an airtight pump makes it one of the best Vitamin C serums I’ve come across — and why it’s consistently on my list of best Vitamin C serums year after year.

So, about that innovative BeautyStat delivery system? It’s actually patented! You won’t find it in any other Vitamin C products anywhere. There are two patents, in fact: #9,901,532 and #9,901,533.

The Inkey List | 15% Vitamin C And EGF Brightening Serum

I first wrote about The Inkey List’s 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum in a blog article early last year titled, Dope New Facial Skincare Products from The Inkey List that Caught My Eye!

The 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum seemed like a home-run to me as far as Vitamin C serums go but oddly, it hasn’t gotten as much attention as it should. I have no idea why.

IMG_1688.jpg

So here it is among my top Vitamin C picks of the year. The 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum is such a good, clean, albeit simple formulation.

And it’s only $14.99!

It’s somewhat unexpected, I think. The Inkey List has long been associated with one of its original products from the launch of the brand — the Vitamin C Brightening Cream.

Inkey’s newer 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum is a bit of a departure from the original cream — which actually contains twice the concentration of Vitamin C at 30%. I was honestly expecting a conventional cream when I first tried it. Instead, the 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum can best be described as a translucent “dry serum”. I know. A dry serum?

If you’re familiar with dry oils you have an idea of what I’m getting at. It applies like a wet serum and almost immediately dries on the skin. It’s such an unusual formula — in a wonky, sciency kinda way.

IMG_1690.jpg

15% Vitamin C and EGF is powered by Ascorbyl Glucoside, which according to the expert team at Paula’s Choice is “a stable form of vitamin C combined with glucose. When properly formulated and absorbed into skin, it breaks down to ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C).”

It has a tight INCI with just 13 ingredients in all. There’s really not much more going on with the 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum until deep into the INCI.

The very last ingredient is something called Oligopeptide-1, also known as Epitensive — a synthetic, plant-derived Epidermal Growth Factor that helps to support skin’s elasticity and smooth rough skin texture and even surface lines.

Truthfully, as simple as it is, the 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum is one of the more intriguing products in the entire Inkey range.

IMG_1697.jpg

Josie Maran | Argan Bright Skin Vitamin C Serum

My favorite vitamin C serums are nearly always the ones formulated in an oil base. Not that I don’t trust the stability of well-formulated, water-based vitamin C serums, like the Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster. It’s just a preference thing.

So of course I went nuts when I realized that the Josie Maran Argan Bright Skin Vitamin C Serum is formulated with Argan Oil. Of course it is; it’s Josie’s namesake oil!

The first ingredient in the Argan Bright vitamin c serum for face is, in fact, deeply nourishing Argan Kernel Oil — likely 60-70% of the formula.

IMG_1681.jpg

Josie opted for Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate — a stable, fat soluble form of vitamin C considered comparable to L-ascorbic acid, or pure Vitamin C.

Argan Bright has such a terrific texture; the kind of oily serum I literally looooove to apply. It’s that pleasurable. But a pleasurable texture alone doesn’t put it up there with my favorite Vitamin C serums. It’s also a clean formula, which I always appreciate.

And it’s got a cool brightening cocktail of Marshmallow Root and Licorice Root Extract — a traditional Korean “Hanbang” ingredient and power brightener.

The 100% pure Argan Oil in the formula is also rich in antioxidant Vitamin E that helps keep Vitamin C stable, as well as skin-nourishing, bio-compatible omega fatty acids. Right on the heals of her delicious Skin Dope CBD collection, Josie continues to impress me!

IMG_1682.jpg

The Ordinary | Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution

As is the case with the BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner, no blog article on my favorite Vitamin C serums of the year would be complete without The Ordinary’s Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution. I probably went through a half dozen bottles of it throughout 2020 — and it’s my top recommendation for people just starting out with Vitamin C.

IMG_2687.jpg

It’s easy to use, immediately effective and costs less than $20. Funny, it’s among The Ordinary’s most expensive products. Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution is a very simple formula with just two ingredients: Propanediol and Ethyl Ascorbic Acid.

It’s funny that until I started exploring clean skin care for a “clean routine” I was working on, I had never even considered this Vitamin C serum. Of course it’s a clean formula. With just two active ingredients, it’s clean by default — even though the brand doesn’t aspire to be clean.

For the longest time, my go-to of the brand’s eight Vitamin C products was the Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F. It has has a nice, silky texture — and it’s even got the under-rated antioxidant, Lycopene-rich Tomato Fruit Extract for added environmental defense.

The form of Vitamin C in the Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% formula, Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, acts similarly to Ascorbic Acid and is similar in molecular weight to pure Vitamin C — for quick, visible brightening of the complexion.

IMG_5007.JPG

It’s stabilized, too, in the absence of water, and suspended instead in Propanediol — a commonly used, well-tolerated glycol that enhances the absorption of actives like Vitamin C. Propanediol also possesses hydrating properties that leave skin feeling soft and velvety.

Deciem distinguishes its Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution this way:

“Unlike other Vitamin C derivatives, this ethylated form acts directly like Vitamin C, is closer in molecular weight to actual Vitamin C which allows for faster visible results, and offers a much better stability profile than any known direct-acting form of Vitamin C.”

IMG_2688.jpg

The texture of the Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution is quite interesting. It feels only slightly oily for about ten seconds; then it’s gone. It absorbs right into your skin, similar to a lightweight dry oil. But it isn’t the Vitamin C that makes that happen. It’s the Propanediol which enhances the absorption of the vitamin into the skin’s upper layers where it is most beneficial.

Perhaps what I love most about the Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution is that dry oil texture.

But I love, too, that it’s stabilized, and that it’s packaged in an opaque glass bottle with a dropper. It’s simple, it’s clean, and it’s affordable — at just $18. If you’re looking to incorporate a Vitamin C serum into your skincare routine for the first time, you can’t go wrong with this one.

SHOP THE BLOG: Purchase The Ordinary Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution for $18 here.

That’s it guys! I’m excited to bring you my new list of the best Vitamin C serums for 2021. I know there are dozens of Vitamin C treatments that could easily have made the list. But, as crazy as it is, I can’t try them all!

That said, there are certainly more to come…
